Highways Performance Space Artistic Director Leo Garcia presents The Wanting with moxy phinx. Melding haunting and infectious music by actor/vocalist Katrina Lenk with compelling dance and theater, the show will explore what a person obsessed will do for love, no matter what form, no matter how dangerous. Can a woman survive a lot without limits?
Last season, Katrina Lenk electrified Los Angeles audience members and critics alike with her portrayal of Linda Lovelace in the rock opera Lovelace at the Hayworth Theatre, for which she won the L.A. Weekly Award, the Garland Award, and was nominated for the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award. The dynamic performer is back in another show that allows her talents to burn on stage, an unusual musical experience called The Wanting with moxy phinx. Ms. Lenk stars as her musical persona, moxy phinx.
moxy phinx sings with power, passion and intensity. The music of moxy phinx has been described as “a combination of Bjork meets Marlene Dietrich with a touch of Prince.” Ms. phinx performs live to track (with songs written, recorded and produced by moxy phinx). The production, The Wanting, conceived, directed and choreographed by Janet Roston, includes a company of six dancers, and elements including puppets, masks and film. Director/Choreographer Roston elaborates, “The dancers, through original and darkly sensual movement, create the world of an extremely dysfunctional and decadent family: twin little sisters, a brother, parents and a nanny who engage in perverse pleasures.”
In addition to her award-winning turn in Lovelace, Katrina Lenk has appeared in an array of television episodes and independent film. She has played viola and recorded with bands in Chicago and L.A., including Reyna Larson, Friends of the Jitney, Dave Ramont, Mabel Mabel and Tilda Tora. As moxy phinx, she has played clubs in L.A. and New York, and recorded with assymetrical head, The Milkman, Heda Zousli, Justin Cotta and the Tenderhooks, Mark Governor, and is currently working on finishing an album.
Director/Choreographer Janet Roston’s previous credits include the rock opera shame, based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter at King King Nightclub; Walk’n Thru the Fire at the Hayworth, written by and starring John DiFusco; Possession: The Legend of El Rojo at the Unknown Theater. She choreographed Tracers and Avenue X (Ovation Award nomination) at the Odyssey; Once on This Island (NAACP Theatre Award nomination) and Bed and Sofa at International City Theater; Nite Club Confidential (L.A. Weekly Award) at the Tiffany; and created choreography for Footloose at the Rubicon. She has created for stage, screen and television (currently series choreographer for The New Adventures of Old Christine). Her awards include Palm Desert Choreography Festival; Choreography Media Award; and American Choreography Award.
The dancers include Jennifer Cooper, Kristin D’Andrea (Dec. 6, 13), Daniel Huynh, Whitney Kirk (November 20-22), Jacqueline Lloyd, Michael Quiett and Assistant Director/Choreographer Liz Sroka.
