Pacific Opera Project presents a musical drama straight out of the '50s by the composer of West Side Story. In Trouble in Tahiti, Sam and Dinah's white-picket-fence suburban life hides a terribly troubled marriage. Leonard Bernstein's distinctly American, jazz-inflected lyrics and music come together masterfully in this one-act opera, filled with both laughter and heartfelt emotion as the couple's struggles play out on an analyst's couch, at the office and elsewhere. Each performance also includes a pre-show revue filled with Bernstein's most popular Broadway melodies.

This spunky new little company has a lot of chutzpah...taking on daunting challenges and then pulling them off in a mostly admirable fashion. I give them a lot of credit. This hour-long Bernstein work is a treasure, and they gave it a playful, joyous performance belying the utter seriousness of the material. In the middle of the Korean War, in those glorious years of middle-class conformity and domesticity, Bernstein lobs a real time-bomb onto the scene--perhaps not even perceived at its time as a searing critique of "Americanism," but now clearly a protest against the ennui of the success model. The singers were all good, though I found the soprano so concerned with the proper "placement" of her voice that she effectively swallowed her consonants and muddled her words. I could barely get what she was singing about in the song "I Can Cook." The pianist was very competent and fully engaged in the fun of the afternoon. I wonder if there isn't a small ensemble arrangement they could have used (I know, more musicians to pay). Bravo to all.

Quotes & Highlights

Description

Pacific Opera Project presents a drama straight from the '50s by the composer of West Side Story. Trouble in Tahiti presents a day in the life of Sam and Dinah, an everycouple who live in a little white house in Anytown, USA. Their seemingly wonderful life — real solid silver, wine in the soup, two-door sedan and convertible coupe — hides the real truth of Sam's egomania, Dinah's depression, and the seething contempt in their relationship. There's lots of "trouble" and a little "Tahiti." Bernstein, who wrote the lyrics and the music, masterfully weaves a score filled with both laughter and heartfelt emotion.

Experience fabulous costumes, dancing, and an intimate cast of five incredibly talented artists. A pre-show revue of Bernstein's most popular Broadway melodies will get each performance started before the main act.

The show runs approximately 75 minutes.
