Two of the best singer-songwriters in blues and rock perform in the same night at the beautiful outdoor amphitheater at Montalvo Arts Center. Taj Mahal is renowned for reviving the rural blues tradition and incorporating elements of world music into the traditional forms. Tunes like "She Caught the Katy (And Left Me a Mule to Ride)" have become blues standards, and have have been covered in the film The Blues Brothers as well as by artists as diverse as James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt and Phish. Taj Mahal and his trio will share the bill with John Hiatt, whose lengthy career has made him a giant on both the rock and progressive country music scenes and earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. Over the years, he's been most successful at writing hits for other artists like Bonnie Raitt and Ronnie Milsap, but along the way he's developed a growing cult following drawn in by his earthy mix of rock, country, blues and folk. As usual Bill was hilarious, biting, on point and went straight for the juggular. I still can't understand why for the life of me people would get up and leave half way into the show. Did they not know what they were coming to hear? Bill deserves more respect than that. He was fabulous and I look forward to seeing him again on HBO and live wherever he plays! BTW the venue was beautiful, if you have the chance walk the grounds and check out the art and architecture while you're there and the free shuttle buses were aplenty and in large quantities. A+
