Ingram Marshall and Jim Bengston have worked together on two previous performance projects. Marshall is a contemporary classical composer of "live electronics," tape collages, extended vocals and acoustic instruments often scored in combination for solos, ensembles and orchestras, and he teaches composition at Yale University. Bengston is a well respected landscape photographer.
For their presentation, a projection sequence synchronizes Bengston’s exquisite photographs with an electro-acoustic composition, Alcatraz, which was inspired by the famous Bay Area prison. Four additional compositions for string quartet are performed this night by the acclaimed Afiara String Quartet. Fog Tropes, Evensongs part 1, Eberbach (with projected images), and Evensongs part 2. Both artists are also featured in John Adams' series, Left Coast/West Coast, presented this fall/winter season under the auspices of Jacaranda Music, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
