Gary has continued to grow and write great, new material since I last saw him live, while on Dane Cook's "Tourgasm" comedy tour in 2005. I never seen another comedian who writes so many amazing bits about food (please see the last two tracks of his "Conversations With Inanimate Objects" CD if you need evidence). He did a great job riffing on the mall atmosphere (since the Chicago Improv is actually located in Woodfield Shopping Center in Schaumburg) where he was playing, coming up with hilarious bits on the likes of the Cheesecake Factory, Spencer Gifts, and more. I had opted to take my family (parents and my brother) out to see him, as a birthday gift to my father, since he had heard the aforementioned CD in my car once and found him very funny. I think it is pretty safe to say that it was a resoundingly successful gift. We all laughed ourselves silly, and my parents enjoyed themselves so thoroughly that they begged me to see if I had the old CD on my iPod so that they could get more Gary on the ride home! I warned them that the opening acts at these types of things are often extremely painful, and that proved to largely be the case. The first opener/emcee was in general pretty lackluster and somewhat offensive, but did get us to laugh a few times with some wit. The second opener, I think it is safe to say, basically completely bombed. So, we weren't exactly warmed up for Gary, but the man absolutely nailed it, and it was a non-issue.

Great show...catch him when he's in town. The Improv of Schaumburg is a great and sizable venue with easy/free parking and lots of restaurants to choose from given it's Woodfield Mall location. also has a convenient separate entrance from the parking lot so no schlepping thru the mall.Written on Mar 30 2009
This was my 4th or 5th time at the Improv. With the dining/snacking and/or drinking option set up, it's a nice evening. JI
