Have no idea how it is possible that a speaker could take such a fascinating topic and make it so deadly boring.Written on Jan 29 2012

I loved the first lecture. I find the study of Fashion absolutely delicious and spending time being spoon-fed Fashion-Philosophy was very tasty! I can hardly wait until the next lecture.Written on Jan 27 2012

Although I love the subject matter, I honestly found the presentation to be a bit flat - and even condescending. The speaker mostly just read her notes, and kept asking us "not to be scared" of big ideas. She spoke to us as if she was so vastly knowledgeable about things that it would be hard for us to understand her, which was fairly insulting. That said, it was enjoyable overall, and I'm hoping that as the series progresses, she'll relax a bit. Indeed, she was much more engaging during the Q & A than during the "speech" portion of her presentation.Written on Jan 27 2012

Description
Jessica Burstein is Associate Professor in the Department of English and the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. She works on modernism and the avant-garde; her book Cold Modernism (2012) engages the ways surfaces matter in literature and art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the University of Chicago Franke Center for the Humanities, she writes occasionally for The Chronicle of Higher Education, served as acting editor of Modern Language Quarterly 2010-11, has published in various academic journals, and teaches classes on fashion and modernism, boredom and wandering women. She’s intensely interested in the intellectual history of contemporary visual and writerly arts, and has worked with SAL before, interviewing Joyce Carol Oates, introducing and conducting the Q&A with Annie Leibovitz, and giving pre-talks on Paul Auster, Siri Hustvedt, Jonathan Lethem, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Adam Gopnik.
