One of the most infamous figures in American history -- Lizzie Borden -- comes to the stage in the innovative drama Blood Relations. Written by Sharon Pollock, one of Canada's premier playwrights, this psychological murder mystery delves into the facts and speculation surrounding the unsolved 1892 double murder of Andrew and Abby Borden. Their daughter Lizzie was tried and acquitted for the murders -- but not before becoming the country's first tabloid celebrity. This dreamlike play within a play takes place ten years after the trial, as Lizzie and her actress friend reenact the various roles from the night of the murders, and the truth of that night begins to come into focus. Intense allegory with very fine acting, sets, music choices, that upset quite a few audience members judging from after-show chatter.
I think it did what Art/Theater is supposed to do: make people think and feel things. Some of the script could be reworked for further effectiveness but be prepared to be surprised, shocked, afraid, sad and angry.
All of that and IMPRESSED.
New for 2012, the Intiman Studio is a small black-box performance space, featuring theatrical works which benefit from an intimate setting. The entrance is located at the rear of the main Intiman Playhouse.
