Beautiful music and not something you get to listen to every day. I initially went in with expectations of hearing polyphonic vocals, but was pleasantly surprised with the singing of the single vocalist.

Very unusual program that was brilliantly executed. How many opportunities does one have to hear medieval music in a gorgeous town hall?

While posterity may primarily remember Pope Leo X (1513-1521) for his extravagant lifestyle financed with the trade of indulgencies, he was also a noteworthy patron of arts and a man of great sensitivity for music. Composer Carpentras reports that listening to polyphony ‘drew pious tears’ from the Pope. Himself a competent composer, Leo X clearly had a weakness for good musicians and his raise to the peak of ecclesiastical power brought about a true (albeit short) Golden Age for many of them.

Follow LA MORRA to Pope’s private chambers where an intimate concert is to be performed by the best of Papal musici segreti (“secret musicians”). Among them is Leo’s “old friend”, a German-Jewish lutenist Gian Maria Alemanni, with a younger, highly talented colleague Francesco Canova da Milano. They are joined by a handful of other excellent instrumentalists and a singer from the Papal choir. Their music is intended only for the pontifex and those, who had the honor of being invited.
