Take a musical trip to the Indonesian island of Java, courtesy of the Cornish Music Series and Gamelan Pacifica, a traditional ensemble who'll perform lyrical settings of the Javanese poetry known as Laras Madya. Called "one of the Northwest's best-kept musical secrets" by Seattle Weekly, they'll be joined by vocal ensemble Canzonetta, along with special guest artist Heri Purwanto, a master of the traditional instrument grouping known as a gamelan, which includes everything from xylophones, kendang (drums) and bowed and plucked strings to gongs and bamboo flutes. Hee Sung Jang is early in what gives every indication of being a successful career as a concert pianist. The only pity is that her recital at the Cornish School in Seattle was not better attended. Her program of Haydn (C Minor Sonata), Ravel (Valses noble et sentimentale), Gerswin medley, and Rachmaninoff (Sonata No. 2 Op 36) showed off her varied and impressive skills. Ms Jang is at home on stage and in command of her repertoire. The small Cornish Hall is overwhelmed by the Steinway grand and the power of Ms Jang's playing.
