Joe Montello's adaptation of The Santaland Diaries returns to Seattle Public Theater just in time for the holidays, starring audience favorite Patrick Lennon once again as David, aka Crumpet the Elf. This outrageously funny one-man show is based on author David Sedaris' essay on the trials and tribulations of working as a department store elf during the Christmas season. Told in Sedaris' inimitable sardonic style, The Santaland Diaries is steeped in caustic humor and irony that strips away the layers of frenzied holiday insanity to reveal the best and worst in us all. Sedaris delightfully skewers parents, children, holiday consumerism and even his own cynical protagonist. The show captures the true holiday spirit of excitement, stress, wonder, disillusionment, hope, disappointment and humiliation that represents, for many, the real experience of this time of year. A very funny Python-esque romp through popular culture full of interweaving plot threads, recurrent themes, and contemporary ideas. All the cast are funny in their own right, and combined they harness comedic ideas that transcend each individual's comic potential.
Quotes & Highlights
- "Now they've reunited. Back in the day, we wrote of The Habit: 'Really fucking funny ... Go. You won't regret it.' That is still true ... Just go. You won't regret it." --The Stranger
- " ... exquisite comic timing, clever wordplay and kooky characters ... Suddenly we remember why it was so hard to break this humorous habit the first time around." --Seattle Magazine
The Habit will bring new material to the shores of Greenlake with a longer run that is sure to sell out. There will be sketches about day to day living with David Bowie and a Minotaur inside a Labyrinth, Doctors without Priorities, the secret to a perfect high-five, and look for a new dance about men slapping each other looking for their keys.
