The third annual Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour 2012 makes a stop at the Northwest Film Forum with a screening of six entertaining, inspiring and motivating short films. Chosen from some 500 entries, the six shorts in this year's festival feature the best narrative, documentary and animated shorts from women filmmakers all over the world, including the U.S., Germany, South Africa and India. From Kelly Gallagher's innovative The Herstory of the Female Filmmaker, which provides a look back at women in cinema, to Shilpa Munikempanna's Kaveri, about a 13-year-old's journey toward womanhood, this year's WFI Shorts Tour takes you around the world and back again, through time and into other realms -- including a black-and-white world where a girl is born with paintbrushes on her hands and feet.

Description

The Herstory of the Female Filmmaker
(USA, 15:00, Animation/Documentary)
Directed by Kelly Gallagher
Can you easily name a handful of your favorite women filmmakers? By the end of this documentary, which utilizes an array of different animation techniques such as rotoscope and Claymation, you'll be able to name and get to know some of motion picture's greatest, and often overlooked, contributors.

Protect the Nation
(Germany/South Africa, 16:00, Narrative)
Directed by C. R. Reisser
In the spring of 2008, a shocking wave of xenophobic attacks against foreign immigrants spread across South Africa, leading to the deaths of 62people and the displacement of over 40,000. Protect the Nation looks inside the struggles of a community, and the consequences of greed, miscommunication and hate. When faced with the unexpected kindness of a stranger, a young boy begins to question himself. Does he have the courage to do what's right?

Kaveri
(India, 18:00, Narrative)
Directed by Shilpa Munikempanna
The film follows its protagonist Kaveri, a 13-year-old girl, as she discovers what it means to become a woman. Engulfed by the vastness of the adult world, she searches for a gesture that provides hope.

Danza del Viejo Inmigrante
(USA, 18:00, Documentary)
Directed by Charlene Music
This simple pastiche of daily life features moments of sacrifice and also of joy, as elderly Latinos finds the courage to forge a new life in the United States. An elderly woman reads a poem from her newfound love; a little boy caresses his grandmother's tired face; octogenarians study for their citizenship test; a 98-year-old widow dances for two more years.

Becoming Cephalopod
(USA, 6:00, Experimental)
Directed by Karen Nilsen
In a black-and-white world, a girl born with paintbrushes on her hands and feet has trouble fitting in, and meeting an octopus changes more than just her life.

Eclipse
(USA, 6:00, Animation)
Directed by Liat Loren
A short animation following the plight of Solar Creatures. When the sun, their only source of life disappears, two friends help one another, while most of the others fight for survival.
