We found this to be quite thought provoking. Very interesting setting. Difficult play that was performed well.

I love the clever concept of this play where "misfits" join a circus in pre-WW2 Nazi Germany as a way of cocooning from the rise, or one might hope. Many elements grabbed my undivided attention, like the dichotomy of circus clowns during mid-antics talking about the horrific history unfolding outside their tent. But I found a lot of distraction with the staging. For example, the dressing table (where many characters sit at once) faces away from the audience so the audience cannot grasp some the characters and their interactions. Secondly, the entrances and exits never stopped -- so much that to me it felt too slapstick and I lost hold of some intended emotional elements. The subplots are very interesting and in particular the lead character named "he" gave an outstanding performance. However, I felt an unbalance as some of the other characters were not as fully developed. For example, there is a young Italian girl who is torn between true love and "settling." Good actress, but I felt no sympathy (or feelings) for her character and I really wanted to. The story is certainly food for thought and on that aspect alone, Circus Welt is worth seeing.

Description

World Premiere.

It is the year 1933. Hitler is starting his power grab in Germany. Among the artists and acrobats of Circus Welt, a small circus traveling in the south of Germany, are Jews, blacks, gays, even a communist. They all hope that if they do not get involved, the storm will blow over. Will it? Then one day a mysterious stranger enters and asks to be a clown. His arrival becomes the catalyst in this epic story of love, hate, life, and death.

Loosely based on Leonid Andreyev’s 1915 classic He Who Gets Slapped, Circus Welt is written and directed by the internationally noted stage director Pavel Cerny. This play features a large cast of actors well known from Hollywood films, TV, and stage.
