Sherman Oaks comedy troupe L.A. Connection tackles Reefer Madness, as part of its Mad Movies event, where the troupe takes old movies and redubs them with improvised dialogue. Mad Movies was a hit show on Nickelodeon and L.A. Connection won an Ace Award, for their take on Sherlock Holmes for A&E. Reefer Madness is a melodramatic drug education film from the 1930s, hilariously redubbed by L.A. Connection with their own live dialogue, music and sound effects.

The comedy theater is located in the valley on Ventura Blvd. The venue is not very big. The screen that the movie is viewed on is a regular sized projection screen. The improv was funny, I enjoyed it. They will be having a Sherlock Holmes mystery one in the near future. The parking is scarce in the area so come 10 minutes earlier.

While the concept for this show was very funny and there were some funny lines. The sound was very poor and the actors mumbled through a lot of the film where they were dubbing over the real characters in the old film. This combination of poor sound and mumbling from the actors made the show a disappointment.

More Information About Mad Movies: Reefer Madness

Quotes & Highlights

  • “One of The Top 3 Comedy Clubs in All of Southern California” --KABC-TV
  • 2007, 2008 & 2009 Winner “Best Improv Group” from MyFoxLa.com

Description

The Sherman Oaks based comedy troupe has been dubbing old films since 1982.  The process began with a live performance of  Attack of The 50 Foot Woman at the Fox Venice Theater.  Since then the group has dubbed hundreds of movies live and has produced the cult hit series Mad Movies, which was Nickelodeon’s top rated show for two years.  LAC was also nominated for a CableAce Award in the “Best Comedy Special” category for dubbing a Sherlock Holmes classic on The A&E Network.

The concept is simple. The actors sit in the front row armed with microphones. LAC then eliminates the original soundtrack and the actors dub in a brand new hilarious comedy soundtrack live with new  music and sound effects.

Reefer Madness was created in 1936 as a training film for students propagandizing the horrors of marijuana use.  The LAC version turns the leading drug dealer into an undercover cop who cannot find marijuana even when it is right under his nose.  The school principal in the original movie is now running a company called “Drugway” which helps people set up their own medical marijuana dispensaries.
