Kathleen Turner in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins

Full Price:
$67.00 - $87.00
Our Price:
$34.50 - $44.50

The Geffen Playhouse presents the story of Molly Ivins, the outspoken sharp-witted Texas reporter whose liberal journalism brought her national fame and a job at The New York Times, where she wrote Elvis Presley's obituary. Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner plays the fiery redhead, a self-proclaimed "pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be." Though The New York Times had hired Ivins to bring life to its staid writing style, her political edginess and controversial social commentary eventually proved to be too much, and Ivins moved on to Texas papers that embraced her sharp-tongued humor. This acclaimed show captures Ivins' unique character using personal anecdotes and her colorful take on national politics. Learn More

We know that our brains end up looking like fried eggs on drugs but it's a more pleasant outcome when we get "Fry'ed" by this intoxicating performance. A true tour-de-force by a surprising young talent who takes on the evil that lurks in the White House and tells like it is...the Darth Vader of no-child left behind has met the force and Mr. Fry it is. This is truly a masterpiece solo performance that will keep you riveted to your seats.

I took my two teenagers to see the show, along with a family of four we know, and we all thought it was fantastic. Very entertaining, poignant (did I really say that word?) and quite touching. The entire audience (approx. 50-60 people, I think) was riveted - not a single person got up for the entire 80 minute performance. (I don't think anyone sneezed or coughed, either....) He tells a great story, and he tells it very well.

Worth mentioning is that the adults in our group felt that the first 10 minutes should perhaps be edited (or cut altogether) Meant as a setup, it was not indicative of the rest of the show in style or content and we were a bit concerned. After the first 10 minutes, however, it was rock solid, and we really had a fantastic experience. Really worth seeing for ages 13 and up.

I almost missed 'Mr Fry' because Ive grown to hate one person shows. I dont begrudge anyone their opportunity to spin self-indulgent tales of their comically tortured childhood I just don't want to see them anymore. So, having been annoyed so many times, my preference to seeing most one person shows would be to stay home. Or even to shoot acid into my eyeball. Anything. I was more than pleasantly surprised at the proficiency with which Mr. Freiberger gave life to the many characters in his journey as a teacher in the LA school system. I was with him every step of the way in this captivating, gripping, and hilarious naration. This is definitely a must-see performance; don't miss it!
