Buried Child: Sam Shepard's Pulitzer-Winning Family Drama

Full Price:
$20.00 - $45.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $22.50

Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. Kenneth Kelleher directs this San Jose Stage Company production. Learn More

I did not realize it was opening night when I bought the tickets. Unfortunately, the cast and crew was not ready for opening night! The show started almost 40 minutes late with the house opening for seating 30 minutes after the scheduled curtain time.

The start of the show was rough; I was not sure. The show did improve through the performance. Some good moments in the show.

The theatre is very intimate with a small cafe attached.

A pleasant, funny gay twist on the "Christmas Carol" classic. Strange how the neither guy in the poster nor anyone like him appears in the show. There was no need for such false advertising because the show was enjoyable with fairly limited wincing due to the employment of predictable gay stereotypes.

It was ok, it lacked organization. The actors are talented, but they kept changing the era they were supposed to be in. Also, the play started 35 minutes, big no no.

The cast is good and very talented, but was unfortunately limited with the lack of a truly festive, gay revision of the Old Charles Dickens original to work with, nor did the play have the deep pathos to turn Scrooge's attitude into the benevolent character at the ending. There were touches of witty gay dialogue but the last half of the writing falls flat to make it a memorable evening for a Christmas play. Beware: the shirtless model is not in the cast!
