With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

I would have liked to have given this 3.5, but in choosing between the two ratings, 4 would be more appropriate. This was my first experience with the Roundhouse Theater in Silver Spring, though I've seen a few productions at the Bethesda venue. Laura C. Harris "The Extra" practically stole the show in her every gesture and word, truly above the mark in all regards. Where some plays tend to lose their steam in the middle or not deliver the closing we hope, this production continued to increase in depth, artistry, and breadth until by the end you have been on a satisfying journey with each of the characters, transferring out of the satirical comedy of the beginning into the more reflective transformation of the story by the end.

It is over the top.
It is grand.
They use music from Ben-Hur (always a win!).
I laughed out loud more than I have at the theater in years.
"The Extra" and "The Boy" (Jay Saunders) act with such authenticity they cannot help but steal the heart and the eye in all of there scenes.
Be advised there is no intermission. I believe the play came in at around an hour and fifteen minutes, but I could be off by ten or so- I didn't have a watch.

One note that I would make from my companion's review of it. He went expecting to see a play with much more emphasis on the era or Third Reich and was a little surprised and disappointed that the entire play consisted within the confines of 'the film' that was being done, i.e. in the story of the Amazon and Achilles and the cast/crew making it.

If this is your first time to the Round House, be advised that seating is first come, first serve. We went during the week and had fabulous front-row seats. The staff was courteous and theater just of the right size to where I can say I don't believe there is a bad seat in the house. Take advantage of the half-price tickets to the show, it's worth the viewing.

More Information About Amazons and Their Men

Description

Written by Jordan Harrison
Directed by Michael Dove & Elissa Goetschius

Famous (and infamous) for glamorizing a fascist regime in her propaganda films, a young director seeks artistic vindication. In her latest film, she creates a fantasy world of drama and beauty - casting herself as an Amazon Queen, tormented by love for the war-hero, Achilles. But in the real world, another war is brewing.Set in Third Reich Germany and based loosely on the life of Leni Riefenstahl (director of "Triumph of the Will"), "Amazons and Their Men" chronicles the creation of Art -- and the collapse of a society.
