Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion
- Full Price:
- $25.00
- Our Price:
- $10.00
With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

Its difficult to capture the entirety of Tolstoy's massive book, particularly one that is primarily about the complexities of its characters (rather than plot), in a 2 hour play. However, this performance was well acted (I particularly liked the alcoholic cousin, Betsy) and overall..very well done.Written on Mar 02 2009
There were no 'adult beverages'available at the concession table...just FYI (Maybe Betsy stole them).

Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Enjoyable performance. The story adaptation was well-written and delivered with memorable dramatic flair. The actors worked very well together. Felt close to the action. The characters seemed to naturally draw you in.Written on Feb 24 2009
I particularly enjoyed the photographic transitions between scenes. Props were skillfully set and even the unexpected glass breaking on the floor was flawlessly blended by the witty response of the character speaking at the time.
The music, fashions, props, and lighting all worked well together. It was a wonderful, little long, but enjoyable event.
Kudos to the playwright, the actors, and the pleasant theater staff for a fantastic afternoon!!!

The show ran a little longer than I expected, but I thought it was a good show and was well acted. There were a couple of singing sequences that were a little painful (but thankfully not too many). I thought it was good show for the price.Written on Feb 23 2009

The acting was wonderful. The play itself was a bit strange. It was still Anna Karanina but it was set in post WWI France. So Vronsky was a speechwriter, Karanin was the Prime Minister, and so on. I dont know why it couldnt have been set in Russia as Tolstoj wrote it.Written on Mar 02 2009
A positive was that all actors/actresses were on stage at all times. Very interesting.

Description
Round House Theatre presents
Anna K
Based on Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, adapted by Jacqueline E. Lawton
By theHegira
Directed by Shirley Serotsky
Dramaturgy by Rachel Miller
With Erica Chamblee, Kristen Egermeier, Danny Gavigan, Theo Hadjmichael, Adrienne Nelson, Francisco Reinoso, Jessica Rodriguez, and Theodore Snead
Anna Karenina is Tolstoy's classic take on love and adultery set against the backdrop of high society Moscow and St. Petersburg. Keeping with the rich, complex, and masterful cultural setting, Anna K is set in Paris during the 1920s, at a time when African-American artists fled to the city of lights, love and opportunity. This provocative adaptation follows Anna K as she struggles to leave a loveless marriage and her adoring young son so that she might achieve a successful career and embrace the love of her life. Appropriate for ages 15 and up.
Led by Producing Artistic Director Danielle A. Drakes, theHegira, a creative collaborative and resource for artistic women of the African Diaspora, produces work echoing what it means to be a female woman of color. They showcase works that link women of the African Diaspora, whose artistic efforts are underrepresented in the theatrical mainstream. theHegira aims to develop, examine, hone, and produce quality work through a dialogue with artists embracing stories of struggle, survival and triumph.
