Acclaimed Playwright Charles Mee (Summertime, Big Love) has created a kaleidoscopic odyssey of images, music and dance in the style of artist Robert Rauschenberg, had Rauschenberg been a playwright not a painter. Featuring business schemes, a pizza delivery boy, chicken jokes, golf, whimsy and nostalgia, bobrauschenbergamerica is a journey across the American landscape. More than a biographical portrait, the play is a tribute to one artist's singular vision.

Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Our Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

Even those not familiar with Robert Rauschenberg's collages would enjoy the sometimes hilarious and off-the-wall, sometimes touching and authentic vignettes that make up this show. You'll leave with at least one heady, clever chicken joke to share with your friends and having seen the funniest cake-eating sequence. My only complaint is that Round House or Forum should have provided more background info on Rauschenberg and his medium; it helps make things easier to understand.

I did not understand what was going on for parts of it, but I took the show for what it was, and it was very enjoyable.

Quotes & Highlights

Description

A fantastical road trip through the American landscape, written as Robert Rauschenberg might conceive it had he been a playwright instead of a painter. Inspired by one of America’s greatest visual artists, Charles Mee creates a Rauschenberg-esque collage of images, music, and dance that paints a distinct history of a nation and culture as well as a glimpse into its future. Whimsical and nostalgic, bobrauschenbergamerica is a joyous celebration of life and art.
