Round House Theatre's Silver Spring Series presents Cherry Smoke. Set in an economically devastated area between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, the play follows Fish, who makes a living in underground boxing matches and tries to stay out of jail; and Cherry, the homeless girl who falls in love with him. Author James McManus based his 2006 Princess Grace Award-winning play on people he observed while growing up as the son of a steelworker in Pittsburgh.

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

This was a brutally beautiful production with some incredibly touching performances. Simple effective staging, set and lights. A memorable evening.

The acting was good, but the play itself was too long for one act.

A bit long for a one act play. Good story line but a bit rambling at times.

Description

Meet Fish. Fish was born in fire, and takes care of himself. In the economically devastated area between Pittsburgh and West Virginia, he makes a dangerous living in the underground boxing matches. His younger brother, Duffy, patches his cuts between rounds, and tries to keep him out of jail. Cherry, a local homeless girl, falls in love with Fish, and they build a world around themselves. For Duffy and his girl Bug, life is about finding a way to survive. But Fish is not put together that way. He has restless blood, and he’s always fought himself and his friends out of trouble. This magical, visceral, uncompromising drama launched James McManus’ career across the globe.

The D.C.-area premiere is directed by Jessica Burgess and features Tim Getman, Julia Proctor, Jjana Valentiner, and Cliff Williams.
