This semi-autobiographical one-woman play chronicles the life of Jacqueline Butler, a black middle-class doctor's daughter growing up in Queens in summer, 1962. When Jackie's parents decide to send her to a predominantly Jewish school in Greenwich Village, her world is turned upside down. Jackie tries to put the pieces of her identity together as she rides the E train between Queens and Manhattan, between black and white worlds, and between cream soda and Crème de Menthe.

Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Full Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

I enjoyed the play very much. Many of the lines were poetic; othters were very funny. There were poignant parts as well.
It really evoked the early 1960s.

I thought the actress played the many roles she portrayed very well. It would be helpful, though, if she knew the script a bit better.

I thought the play was fair but my husband did not like it. The actress, and it was a one person show, had to read her lines frequently. The second half was definitely funnier and more interesting that the first act. I think the play has potential but the first act should be beefed up and the actress needs to learn all her lines.

Kudos to playwright Jennings. Her writing is so brilliant, so REAL, poignant, funny, and insightful. There are riches packed into this play. The actress is absolutely marvelous, a shining light, and long on endurance. (How could she remember all those lines?) I wished for a second intermission for her and me (there was only one). I've never been to a one-person performance, and I found it intense. So, so glad I went though. A very lively work of art.
