Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Our Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

I hadn't read the book before I went to see the play. My boyfriend, who has read the book several times, says that they followed the book closely considering that the play was only about 1.5 hrs, incl. a 10 min. intermission. The acting was good, considering they were high school actors. My favorite actor was the guy who played the professor. The roundhouse stage is small and intimate. Overall, I enjoyed this show.

This was a memorable experience, not just a play. "Dracula" was performed by high school students who worked together with Roundhouse actors to put on this year's "Sarah Play" - an annual production to honor Sarah Emily Metzger, an aspiring actress who died when she was still a teenager. We didn't know this beforehand; we just wanted to see "Dracula" and thought our own teenager daughter would enjoy seeing actors her own age. The young actors were remarkably good, the cast and audience shared a palpable enthusiasm for theater, and it was moving to see Sarah's parents thanking the cast at the end. We will eagerly look forward to next year's Sarah's Play.
