FarFar Oasis is a companion piece to the original theatrical scrapbook, Low Tide Hotel. Taking the Middle Eastern desert as its inspiration, it uses old-time luggage labels, tales of great explorers and the notion of mapping the unknown; a collage of Arabiana songs like the Sheikh of Araby, as well as original compositions, the poetry of Rumi, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayam and Ozymandias, and the riddle of the sphinx.

Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

Far Far Oasis was brilliant! The small cast worked magic: every gesture and word was graceful and artistic. Can't wait for more from these guys.

Captivating and funny! We need laughs! We learn best when nudged out of our habitual ways of thinking by laughing at ourselves.
Through thought provoking vignettes, Happenstance helped us recognize the US/American tendency to romanticize another's culture and in so doing diminish and stereotype the other. While they focused on vaudevillian and early 20th century commercial references, one can only project that we are guilty of the same sins today. Thank you!

Description

In the early 20th Century, Europeans and Americans indulged their romantic notions of the Middle Eastern Desert in popular culture. FarFar Oasis takes as its point of departure this rich cultural phenomenon, contrasting the era’s charmed perceptions with the reality they missed in a pastiche of Rumi, Valentino, and songs like the Sheik of Araby. Lookie, lookie, lookie, see the hootchie kootchie girl. The Post called Mark Jaster a “clown extraordinaire and one of the most graceful performers you will ever see on a stage.” Maryland Renaissance Festival fans know him as A Fool Named “O”. You’ll love the kinetic humor, playful interaction, musical wit, and inventive imagination of Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, and Happenstance Theatre Company.
