Steve Yockey's Pluto is an unconventional family drama that tells the familiar tale of a mother struggling to connect with her son, but places them in a surreal world where the obstacles they face are unexpected and sometimes absurd. The San Francisco Chronicle has described Yockey's artistic voice as "fiercely imaginative and finely tuned," and this latest play continues that trend. In the aftermath of a local tragedy, a single mother tries desperately to jump-start her relationship with her solitary son across the breakfast table. But strange forces keep interfering: odd characters take residence in her appliances, and the family dog not only talks, but has three heads. Oh, and did we mention the angry mob gathering outside? Yockey skillfully allows the mystery of this bizarre day to unfold with perfect pacing, and the audience slowly comes to realize the very real and terrible moment being described through the supernatural events.
