With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

Description

Presented by The University of Maryland
Department of Theatre
in association with Round House Theatre
By Charles Mee
Directed by Blake Robison

Written by American playwright Charles Mee, Hotel Cassiopeia chronicles the life of Joseph Cornell through the exploration of the renowned modern artist’s creative assemblage boxes – collections of discarded souvenirs and mementos, buttons, feathers, marbles, corks, fake-birds, old maps, anything – which he constructed to visually portray his feelings brought on by the unique world he lived in. Having spent the entirety of his adult life caring for his disabled brother Robert while living in his mother’s basement in Queens, Cornell amassed an immense collection of correspondence and journals, each filled with observations and obsessions that reveal his desire to capture through his work the intense feelings of a hidden moment.
