Lyme Park: An Austonian Romance of an Indian Nature is a modern-day retelling of the Jane Austen romance, Northanger Abbey, which tells the story of the heroine, Kavita, who is faced with the choice between living in a Pride and Prejudice fantasy world of her own making or the not-so-tidy world of reality where Mr. Darcy may not exist.

Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Full Price:

Our Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

I went to the play Lyme Park at Round House Theater in Silver Spring mostly because it was advertised as a Jane Austen take off. I was NOT disappointed. If you love lavish costumes and incredible stage sets, this is not the play for that, BUT if you love a well written script and good acting then you will thoroughly enjoy this production. The author used humor and a very sound knowledge of Austen's canon to create this modern take on the single life and trying to find Mr.or Miss Right. There are only 5 actors that make up the cast one of whom has 3 different parts. The only props are some black boxes and an occasional tea cup or glass. Nonetheless, the focus was where it should be on the acting and the script. I laughed all the way through and would love to see another production with any of these fine actors again. The price was right! Very small audience seating which made for a very intimate setting. I recommend you go see it.

This was a poorly staged and directed show. The actors often had long dialogues with their back to a section of the audience. They also blew their lines frequently. This was below amateur in quality.

We enjoyed the play. While it was based on Jane Austin;s writing, you did not have to be a big Jane Austin fan to enjoy the humor of the play and it's handling of racial/ethnic differences. Good fun.

I would have given it four stars if three of the five actors had not fluffed their lines. I enjoyed the stage setting and the storyline.
