The inaugural production of Forum Theatre's eighth season is Caryl Churchill's Mad Forest. On the eve of the Romanian Revolution in 1989, and under the eternal watch of the secret police, two families -- one poor and one wealthy -- struggle both to save their friendship and survive the winter. But once the violence has ceased and the euphoria has lifted, will anything have changed? A blend of journalism, fantasy and harsh realism, Mad Forest, the well-researched story of the Romanians at a turning point, delves into the madness and fervor of a society on the brink of upheaval. Forum is working with local actor Dan Istrate, who is Romanian and was 16 at the time of the revolution. Istrate is not only working with the actors on the Romanian language and accent sections of the play but also shared his experiences to give the cast a sense of what life was like just before, during and after the revolution.

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

This play was simply awful. Terrible acting, much worse screenplay. And it was incredibly long, making it even harder to bear.

But really it just made no sense. It was historically inaccurate and incredibly prejudicial against the Romanian people. It made them all seem like racist, closed-minded people. It clearly outlines the converse: how incredibly prejudiced and culturally inept the playwright is. Just about every bad stereotype about the romanian people it's in this thing...from gypsies, to eastern european girls marrying americans for passports, to vampires...yes, vampires...proving how historically accurate this play really is...

And the fake accents were terrible as well.
