Forum Theatre's production of Naomi Wallace's award-winning dark comedy takes place in plague-stricken 1665 London. A well-to-do couple is quarantined to their home, recently invaded by a young girl and a mysterious sailor. The close quarters spark mistrust, leading to a clash of cultural, social, and sexual boundaries in this fiercely intense, but humorous play.

Tony Kushner's Adaptation of 17th Century Play The Illusion

Full Price:

Our Price:

With this modern reinvention, Tony Kushner (Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America) triumphantly reinvents L'illusion Comique,, the fascinating, theatrical fairy-tale first told by French classical dramatist Pierre Corneille more than 370 years ago. A father, on a mission to reunite with his estranged son, enlists the services of a powerful sorcerer who conjures up provocative images from the young man's life. The father is led deep into a maze of romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and murder. But just how much of it is true? Witty and profound, timely and transcendent, The Illusion weaves reality and truth with the magic of the theater. Learn More

I must say, I attended the show tonight and was disheartened that so many people are missing out on this rare treat! I had never read the play, and was totally entranced by the performances, the set, the sound, and the story of the chaos these people encounter in themselves during quarantine.

Having seen 10 or so DC productions in the past month, this is right up there with Arena's Virginia Woolf for a show you should not miss. The recent reviews do not do this production justice - I for one will be going back to see it again.

Also, do yourself a favor and go on a night with a post-show talkback - it was such a bonus to talk to the actors and company members in their aptly named 'Forum'

I had no problem with the acting. However, I found this a very depressing play and don't understand why they call it a "dark comedy". It is dark but I don't remember anyone laughing out loud. I left at intermission. Maybe the second act had some humor.

Great play in a small, intimate theater. I highly recommend it.

This is my first review. I simply had to say something about this piece, having read some of the negativity posted before this. It was an interesting play and an absolutely striking production. I thought it was going to be more of a comedy as well, but was not disappointed with the well-done, dry humor that peppered the piece. Quite frankly, the show is set during the plague. People die. It's hard to be genuinely funny about death. No, really, think about that. But through it all, the humanity of the characters was interesting. I was particularly touched by the evolution of the matron of the house. I enjoyed how each of the characters had their weaknesses and their strengths- it is difficult to find a show in which just one or two actors to explore their characters to the depth that they deserve. To have the four major characters playing together as though they had all done their homework- this play may not have been a comedy, but it was still extremely well done. People who did not take the show for what it was worth, and who dwell on the fact that it did not make them laugh- well, I apologize for them. I mayn't have howled with laughter, but the acting, the set and the character interaction between scenes- everything was just so well put together. Bless Forum, bless the tech crew and bless the actors- may they go on to do more great work like this.
