A brilliant linguist who studies the loss of world languages faces the potential end of his marriage unless he can find the words to stop his wife from leaving. Meanwhile his archival assistant is mute with adoration for him and his newest subjects, an elderly couple who are the last speakers of an obscure language, refuse to utter a word to one another. This magically inventive comedy about communication, love, and Esperanto from Julia Cho was commissioned by Roundabout Theatre Company and developed at the O'Neill National Playwrights Conference. It recently won the 2010 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Learn More

The play is based loosely on T.S. Eliot's poem and Joseph Cornell's shadow boxes, so it is helpful to have reviewed these recently. The performance is excellent. We have enjoyed prior Happenstance Theater performances, and look forward to seeing them at the 2010 DC Fringe Festival.Written on Jun 22 2010
