Stephen Sondheim's thrilling musical masterpiece Sweeney Todd delivers a bloody good time with its tale of murderous "barber-ism" and culinary crime. Set in 19th-century London, the story follows the title character, who after being banished for 15 years on false charges, returns to exact his revenge on those who wronged him. Teaming up with local pie maker Mrs. Lovett, they open a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies ... or does he? This darkly funny show has been shocking and delighting audiences worldwide since its 1979 Broadway premiere won eight Tony Awards. It has since been made into a hit film by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp. Learn More
From the outside, the theater (Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center) did not look like a theater. I passed it by initially. Only a small sign with the name of the show finally alerted me to the venue. Plenty of free parking was available in the Center's lot.travel • Feb 17 2014 star this tip starred

A small theater with big voices. I'm a broadway musical junky and I'd never heard of this pop opera. I'm glad Goldstar offered it to me and that Simi Valley staged it. The vocals and acting were great. The stage well utilized, and the seats comfy. I wish some of the lyrics had been more clear, but the show was great. Free parking was the cherry on top.
_bare: a pop opera _is recommended for audiences age 14 and older.
