Actors Repertory Theatre of Simi presents the classic story To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern novel by Harper Lee, this adaptation by Christopher Sergel follows the journey of Scout Finch whose father Atticus has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he did not commit. As the trial progresses, Scout and her brother Jem see their community divided over issues of justice and racism. The tale compels us to take an honest look at our nation's past and our moral responsibility to each other. The production features veteran actor Don Swayze (True Blood) as Atticus Finch and former NFL player Dwight Hicks as Tom Robinson. Learn More

It was a fun musical. We truly enjoyed Carmen and Nicki's performances.Written on Sep 27 2010
However, the seats at this venue were very uncomfortable. Extremely narrow aisles. We had to sit with our knees slanted to the side because our knees were knocking up against the seat in front of us. Luckily, the balcony wasn't full and we moved to a row with only one other person so we could space out.

Loved the acting, the sets, the costumes, the dancing - all fabulous. The script was a bit long. Could have easily been edited a bit. Overall, though, very sweet and fun show. Especially the actor who played the Director. Wonderful!Written on Sep 13 2010

This is the third time I have seen Curtains. The first time was in its "out of town tryout" at the Ahmanson in Los Angeles in July 2006. At that time my wife said it was her favorite musical seen to that time.Written on Sep 28 2010
I then saw it at the Hirschfeld in NYC in April 2008. (No, I was not chasing the show - I was in "da Big Apple on business.) By then the final changes had been made and the staging locked in. As I left the theater I realized it was definitely on my "all-time favorites" list as well.
Fast forward to 2010: My weekly Goldstar e-mail comes and there it says that a local production of Curtains is playing not to far away in Simi Valley. So I ask my lady if she would like to see it again. Her answer was "yes" before I could get the final words of my question out. So we went, and we were not disappointed.
I will not try to compare this regional theater mounting of Curtains with the Ahmanson or the final version at the Hirschfeld. Regional theater does not have the multi-million dollar budgets that is the norm for a Broadway. That said, the devotion of the cast and crew to staging this last show by the great creative duo of John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (with additional lyrics by Rupert Holmes) is obvious from the first note of the ovature to the final bow. These are people dedicated to their craft and it is that dedication which makes the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center production of "Curtains" a great way to spend an afternoon or evening away from the confines of ones home.
No its not what I would classify as an "ultimatre theater experience." Rather its pure fun and you leave the theater feeling that the time -- and money -- that you spent to see this show was worth every minute and every cent. Most of all you come away with a smile on your your face and a tune in your heart trying to reach your lips. And for this scrtibe, thats what good musical theater is all about.

I enjoyed the show very much. The acting and musical numbers were excellent, and the story had drama, humor and romance-something for everyone.Written on Oct 20 2010
