Composer Jonathan Larson conceived Rent as a "Hair for the '90s;" his attempt to get the younger generation interested in musical theater again. To accomplish this, he took Puccini's opera La Boheme, about struggling artists dealing with tuberculosis and reimagined it using the lives of young artists of New York's East Village dealing with AIDS and other modern issues. Larson's vision was a success and Rent went on to become a smash success.

Actors Repertory Theatre of Simi presents the classic story To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern novel by Harper Lee, this adaptation by Christopher Sergel follows the journey of Scout Finch whose father Atticus has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he did not commit. As the trial progresses, Scout and her brother Jem see their community divided over issues of justice and racism. The tale compels us to take an honest look at our nation's past and our moral responsibility to each other. The production features veteran actor Don Swayze (True Blood) as Atticus Finch and former NFL player Dwight Hicks as Tom Robinson. Learn More

I had such a great time at the show! I read the reviews beforehand and they were great so I had high expectations going into it, and it did indeed measure up to them. I was moved to tears a number of times because I was so overwhekmed by the story and the songs. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, especially for a mere $10. I watched Butterfly Lovers earlier that weekend and was hugely disappointed by it, but after this performance, it completely made up for it. A couple of drawbacks however are the sound system and the actors' voices both of which should somehow be projected better.

First rate show ! the cast is great each with an amazing voice.(especially the soloist in "Seasons of Love") The background people were hysterical especially the guy in the floppy brimmed canvas hat! I'm going to go again and take some friends. Just go and enjoy!

Description

For composer Jonathon Larson, Rent was a “Hair for the 90’s,” a way to attract the MTV generation to musicals. His concept was to update what had been a gritty show in its day – Pucinni’s opera La Boheme into a gritty show of our day. La Boheme dramatized the hard lives and doomed dreams of struggling Parisian artists dealing with tuberculosis – Larson updated that plot to New York’s East Village and had the similarly challenged artists dealing with the effects of AIDS on their community. The show opened in the Nederlander Theater on the 100th Anniversary of “La Boheme”. Unfortunately Larson died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm the night of the show’s final preview. His creation, however, went on to become one of the biggest Broadway success stories of the decade, sweeping all the major theater awards of 1996 including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Obie Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, four Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. In the process it single-handedly reinvigorated Broadway with a much needed shot in the arm.
