Actors Repertory Theatre of Simi presents the classic story To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern novel by Harper Lee, this adaptation by Christopher Sergel follows the journey of Scout Finch whose father Atticus has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he did not commit. As the trial progresses, Scout and her brother Jem see their community divided over issues of justice and racism. The tale compels us to take an honest look at our nation's past and our moral responsibility to each other. As probably the only person on the planet who had never seen ANY version of this show, my expectations were quite high from all I'd heard. This performance exceeded those expectations. The story line takes you through an emotional roller coaster aided by the uber talented cast. By the end I was vested in the characters and had several of the songs permanently ingrained in my mind. I'd been concerned about a liberal play in conservative Simi Valley, but my concerns proved completely unfounded. I recommend that everyone give this show an afternoon or evening of your time. You'll be pleasantly surprised!Written on Jan 25 2011

Description
Composer Jonathan Larson conceived Rent as a "Hair for the '90s." His attempt to get the younger generation interested in musical theater again was a success and Rent went on to become a smash. Larson took Puccini's opera La Boheme, about struggling artists dealing with tuberculosis and reimagined it using the lives of young artists of New York's East Village dealing with AIDS and other modern issues. The musical is considered by many the most exuberant and original American musical to come along in a decade, has single-handedly reinvigorated Broadway.
