It's a magical summer afternoon in South Pasadena's lovely St. James Episcopal Church--a historic landmark built in 1906--when The Definiens Project's Tonoi ensemble, dedicated to bringing classical music to the community, plays chamber music in St. James' beautiful interior. With a program including Gounod's Petite Symphonie this is sure to be a great way to spend an afternoon.

Fantastic! They played some great 20th century compositions in a very intimate, informal setting. The instrumentation was quite unique and varied --a combination of group and solo pieces for violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, flute, oboe, and english horn. I already purchased tickets for their next concert!
I did not like the room it was held in and the chairs were hard.
The concert was great. it was nice to be so upclose and personal with the artists. It was a very hot day, and I wish some sort of beverage was provided during intermission.

The Definiens Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to redefining chamber music in a contemporary context in order to eliminate the boundaries between classical music performers and contemporary audiences. The mission of The Definiens Project is to expand and diversify chamber music audiences through redefining the live chamber music performance experience in a contemporary context. They emphasize the value of communicating to an audience by: * Performing a diverse selection of repertoire including music that crosses over into the pop, blues, electronic, jazz and other genres. * Employing imaginative programming, staging, lighting, and image projection to focus on constructing a vivid multi-sensory experience for the audience. * Presenting programs in non-traditional spaces (outside of the concert hall) to allow audiences to experience chamber music in less formal settings.
