Theatre Coup d'Etat presents the first part of Tony Kushner's acclaimed two-part play Angels in America at Lowry Lab Theater. This critically-acclaimed play examines questions of politics, morality, community and forgiveness at the height of the AIDS epidemic. In part 1, Millennium Approaches, the year is 1985 and Ronald Reagan has just been elected to his second term as President. The audience is introduced to two couples, one gay and one straight, each dealing with crises in their relationships. As their fates become intertwined, they are forced to re-evaluate their identities and embrace change. Their journeys, alone and together, open the way for miraculous events to occur. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, Millennium Approaches addresses the social issues surrounding homosexuality and AIDS in a manner that is both intimate and epic at once.

Our Price:
$7.50

Gadfly Theatre founders Immanuel Elliott and Cassandra Snow penned this performance piece that delves into the emotional experiences faced by LGBTs who feel marginalized both by society at large and others in their own community. Culled from interviews and various open submissions, Queer! consists of monologues and short scenes that explore the effects of bigotry across the entire sexual-gender spectrum, but also offers glimmers of hope for the future. Gadfly is now in its third season of presenting exciting and challenging works dealing with queer and feminist issues. Learn More

This 3-hour play is a rhapsody to the gay life, celebrating the breakdown of a marriage, accepting the challenges of HIV-AIDS, seeing religion as hypocrisy. We hated it.

All actors were excellent! Topics covered were very relevant to today's world. However if profanity upsets you this is not the play for you.

I was a bit hesitant going to such a large production in such a small space, but it turned out to be irrelevant. The production was wonderful - ingenious use of set and space, and acting was very moving. Really loved the production.

Description

Once again, Theatre Coup d’Etat is rolling up their sleeves and shooting for the heart with Tony Kushner's award winning saga, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. Winner of the 1993 Pulitzer for drama, Angels in America is set in the 1980s against a backdrop of conservatism, sexual politics, and the discovery of an epidemic cutting a wide cloth though society. Both a love story and a political drama, centering on a group of inextricably connected people whose relationships are disintegrating as a generation falls prey to a culture of greed. Kushner's dark, cynical humor captures the fragility of the human condition and his prophetic and sublime words pierce the heart and move you to tears. Angels in America was a turning point in history of classic American Playwright Literature and 20 years later is still considered a profound and moving theatrical event not to be missed.
