Theatre Coup D'Etat's inaugural Minneapolis production is William Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece, Macbeth. The play tells the story of the ambitious Macbeth, a thane of Scotland. Seduced by the prophecies of three mischievous witches and egged on by his power-hungry wife, he murders the popular King Duncan to gain his crown. He must then must contend with his conscience (as must his wife), the witches and their tricky prophecies as well as increasingly rebellious thanes. This ensemble production highlights the company's use of a theatrical process known as "animal work," which trains the actor to cultivate his primal instincts in order to connect with the physical and emotional depths of the play's characters.

Gadfly Theatre founders Immanuel Elliott and Cassandra Snow penned this performance piece that delves into the emotional experiences faced by LGBTs who feel marginalized both by society at large and others in their own community. Culled from interviews and various open submissions, Queer! consists of monologues and short scenes that explore the effects of bigotry across the entire sexual-gender spectrum, but also offers glimmers of hope for the future. Gadfly is now in its third season of presenting exciting and challenging works dealing with queer and feminist issues. Learn More

It was amazing. Acting and directing was great. I understood it even thou it was Shakespeare. I highly recommend going. Some different approaches to the play.

This was a fantastic version of Macbeth. It shows the true power of Shakespeare's words. There were no sets to speak of. And very little costumes just enough to give you The suggestion of a Royal Court. The real set is the actors and actresses who bring unbelievable power to this production. About 20 to 25 minutes into the play you totally forget that there are no costumes and sets. You were so engrossed in the acting you don't even notice it. The actors are all fairly young. However they seem to bring years of acting experience to the production. I would highly recommend this production even over some of the Guthrie's most recent Shakespeare plays. Which seemed to be dumbing Shakespeare down. By putting it in a context. That totally changes the meaning and power of the words. No dumbing down here just pure Shakespeare. Highly recommended.

An inspired production! The spare black set and costumes added to the dark aura of the play. The actors were uniformly wonderful - especially liked the creative and impressive rendering of Malcolm. I hope this company returns very soon with another production.

Description

Theatre Coup d'Etat's production of Macbeth will require an ensemble effort, built with a high level of energy and performances that will be physically demanding.

At the heart of the show will be a process known as Animal Work. The purpose of the animal work is to enhance the instincts and impulses of the actor by cultivating the primal side that we all have but few of us acknowledge. This will work in conjunction with our company mission: to provoke an emotional and analytical response in our audiences by showing the depth of the human condition through both classical and contemporary works.

After all Macbeth is a story about a human being, not a portrait of a psychopath.
