The Minnesota Historical Society offers a 90-minute walking tour of St. Paul's famed Summit Avenue, named one of America's "Great Streets" in 2008. This excursion highlights the Gilded Age mansions that populate this elite neighborhood, while the friendly and knowledgeable guides share the stories of both the architects who built them and the families that resided within these imposing structures. The social history of the area and current preservation issues will also be topics of discussion on this leisurely stroll, which begins outside the Hill House and ends outside the Cathedral of St. Paul. The three costumed performers were great, but the audience's contributions were outstanding too, including original works. Fun to see Victorian works being read from smartphones in the audience.
Loved the pop quiz ("complete this line and who wrote it"). Some poems were favorites, and some I had never heard before. Lovely tour of the house afterwards. Perfect venue for this event.
