Taking Flight Theatre Company presents Douglas Post's theater noir thriller Earth and Sky. When poet/librarian Sara McKeon learns that her boyfriend of ten weeks has been viciously murdered, she has no idea things are about to get even worse. Evidence suggests that David was possibly involved in kidnapping, rape and murder. Unable to reconcile these accusations with her memories, and fuming that the police don't seem engaged in solving David's murder, Sara begins her own investigation deep into Chicago's urban underworld. The story moves backward and forward in time in overlapping scenes, from Sara and David's first meeting to the climatic denouement, as she finds herself facing her lover's killer.

The play was very well acted and the minmalist set and costume designs really worked well. The lack of an intermission was not a problem because the audience stayed fully engaged in the play. The theater is beautiful with a neat lobby area, but I did not notice any area where one could purchase snacks and drinks. That would have been really nice.

Mostly mediocre acting -- except for show's heroine, who was the most hammy/hysterical/screaming performer I remember seeing in a play. Likely not her fault, she was probably directed that way. Interesting plot twists might have worked if handled by a better writer. No intermission in 1:50 play -- so when one character said -- long before play ended "We've reached the end of the road", my thought was, "If only".

Attendee-hostile on-campus venue. We attended on a bitter cold/windy night. After parking in an empty lot, theater people advised me -- sympathetically -- to move my car to avoid getting a ticket for being in wrong lot. So back into the cold I went. Campus might put up signs if they care where people park on Saturday nights, or they might abate enforcement during performances. But no.

So with all the other local theater choices, we won't be back to this one.

I'm not sure I was a fan of the play itself, but it was well acted.

About the Ticket Supplier: Taking Flight Theatre Company

Formerly CCT with 2nd Flight Theatre Company, Taking Flight Theatre Company was formed in 2003 with a mission to entertain, enlighten, and educate the diverse community in which the campus resides. Productions are produced through the unique collaborative effort of community members as well as NOVA faculty, staff and students.

2nd Flight Productions Theatre Company was officially formed in March of 2003 by six recent college graduates who had met and become best friends as members of the student-run State Your Name Theatre Company at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. As directors, actors, producers and designers, the founders committed to forming a company that would fill the need for community theater in the NOVA area. The company strives to bring accessible, high quality theatre to the diverse community in which they perform.

The two companies merged in April 2008 and all productions will now be performed at the Waddell Theater, located on the NOVA Sterling Campus.
