Stoneham Theatre presents I Capture the Castle, a play by Dodie Smith (author of The Hundred and One Dalmatians), based on her first novel. The play centers around an eccentric family, the Mortmains, who live in a crumbling English castle in the 1930s. Told from the perspective of the precocious teenager Cassandra, the story concerns the arrival of a handsome new landlord who turns the already unusual world of the Mortmains on its head. Stoneham's production of this charming period tale is directed by Stoneham Artistic Director Weylin Symes.

These Shining Lives: Women Fight for Their Rights in a Dark Time

Full Price:
$44.00
Our Price:
$22.00

Even as the young women working at The Radium Dial Corporation forged friendships and built self esteem, their health was secretly being destroyed. This is the central paradox behind These Shining Lives, the celebrated play by Melanie Marnich (HBO's Big Love), now at the Stoneham Theatre. During the 1920's, some 4,000 women painted watch-faces for The Radium Dial Corporation. For many, it was a rare shot at decent employment in a male-dominated business world. Little did the women know, however, that that the radioactive paint they were using would undermine their health for decades to come. These Shining Lives follows four women who, bonded by their workplace experience and mounting health problems, find the courage to stand up to their employers and demand change. Caitlin Lowans directs a limited engagement of this important and moving play. Learn More

A mediocre play very poorly directed (half the time the actors were talking off into the wings or stage rear) -- WAY too much yelling screaming giggling tittering stomping in place of any substantive advancement of the "story" which, again, the director worked hard at muddling. We left at intermission as did many others.

There was a reason the theatre was half-full, the show was less than satisfying. Although the staging was great, for me, I found I couldn't connect to the show's characters. My teen guest and I both had difficulty deciphering what was being said and the show ran too long; it didn't end until after 10p.m. I have seen many, many shows and love live theatre. This show ranks low on my long list...sorry I can't be more encouraging.

A truly enjoyable story and great production. All the performances were wonderful, especially that of the lead, Cassandra.

Description

In this rediscovered gem of a play, the lives of 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain and her eccentric English family are turned upside down with the arrival of a handsome new landlord. As the Mortmains struggle to accept the strangers in their midst, new possibilities and new love unexpectedly begin to bloom. Dodie Smith (also author of The One Hundred and One Dalmatians among others) adapted her delightful romantic novel for the stage in 1954. Terry Teachout, of the Wall St. Journal wrote, "The word 'irresistible' is rarely true, but I don't see how anyone not descended from Scrooge McDuck could fail to fall for I Capture the Castle."
