From Jeff Gould, author of the Off-Broadway hit It's Just Sex, comes a new provocative comedy: Is There Sex After Marriage? Husband Roger and wife Sherry are asking this question themselves after 20 years together. In their attempts to find an answer they embark on a series of hilarious sexual encounters -- some of which come close to tearing them apart and others that re-ignite their flame like old times. Is There Sex After Marriage? may not definitively answer the title question, but it does provide a humorous and thought-provoking look at American marriage. Learn More

This is a classic case of a play unsuited to its venue. The Real Thing involves multiple (maybe 30) scene changes which I would imagine would ideally be done using a revolving stage. Since the theater did not have one, this meant that each scene was followed by a thirty to forty five second (it may have been longer) period during which the stage went dark, then the lights came up a bit, the set was rearranged, the lights went down again and the actors stumbled on to the stage for the next scene. This totally disrupted the flow of the play and the sad thing was that many of the scene changes were really just cosmetic - change the cushions on the sofa to indicate a different room - well, we get it, but did you really have to do this? We have imaginations.
As for the actors, they were uniformaly fine. As for the play, it is difficult to develop much sympathy for a main character who is mainly there to pontificate, which he does at length, sometimes wittily but usually for too long. Perhaps if the scene transitions had been seamless, it would have resulted in a more compelling portrait but as it was, each break just left me wondering what he was going to moan about next. Very disappointing for a Tom Stoppard play.
