A Step Beyond The Rain, a one-woman show written and performed by actress Miata Edoga, is the true story of a mother and her two daughters struggling under the weight of physical and mental illness. Encompassing themes of love, loyalty, loss and liberation, A Step Beyond The Rain explores the relationship between these three very different women, and their individual journeys toward freedom. The play is great, though the acting was a bit uneven. The lead was kinda weak, and the best actor had the smallest part.

Description

A play by Neil LaBute
Directed by Bryan Keith

The Shape of Things is more than a play; it is an examination of human relationships as we know them. This play, by critically acclaimed author Neil LaBute, will be performed by a cast of four.

We follow the story of Adam, a slightly overweight yet hardworking English major, as he enters an intense relationship with Evelyn, an edgy and analytical graduate student in art. As they embark on a passionate and all-consuming relationship, shy and principled Adam begins to bend the rules and follow the suggestions of his seductive new girlfriend. We watch as Adam begins this transformation, betraying both his friends and himself in the name of love.

Labute’s scathing viewpoint on Evelyn’s manipulation of Adam questions the ability to shift perceptions and the consequences of doing so. Is Evelyn wrong for suggesting that Adam make changes to his life? Is Adam’s willingness to follow her suggestions worse? Furthermore, what happens when the line between life and art is blurred?

Director Bryan Keith says “this play begs the question; are we honest? Are we fair?” The answers lie in a chilling final scene that reveals the purpose of Evelyn’s attraction and desire for Adam.

The Shape of Things is the first production to be produced by The Red Brick Road Theatre Company. This team of experienced and passionate individuals came together in the fall of 2007 to create a company that would focus on producing quality shows for the arts community in North Hollywood and the surrounding districts of Los Angeles. This not-for-profit organization seeks to bring attention to shows that feature strong and relevant themes within today’s society, as well as new works that focus on the use of the ensemble to deliver a message.
