More than 50 years ago, West Side Story came along and changed musical theater forever with its explosive dance numbers, energetic score and emotionally engaging portrayal of gang warfare. Taking the Romeo and Juliet story and bringing it into 1950s New York, West Side Story follows two teens as they fall in love, crossing racial divides and igniting gang rivalries with their passion. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim features such hits as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere." From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as one of the greatest love stories of all time and a truly unforgettable theatrical experience. Learn More
E. Grieg — Holberg Suite
The Suite beings with an overture, moves through a rondeau, sarabande, two bourrees, a polonaise and a minuet, and ends with a badinerie.
J. S. Bach — Orchestral Suite # 2 in B minor
The second “play it again” piece is Bach’s Orchestra Suite # 2 in B minor; this piece incorporates dance themes as well. Bach wrote “stylized dances” which were intended for listening not dancing, and its eight movements use traditional French dances as well.
G. F. Handel – Water Music Suite in G Major
Written for King George I in 1717 and performed from a barge in the Thames River. Here again, dance movements are foremost, the sarabande, rigaudon, minuet and bourree.
