William Shakespeare's still-relevant tale of political assassination comes to the stage in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. This gripping drama depicts Julius Caesar's out-of-touch regime, and examines the justifications for his murder, asking whether the conspirators were motivated by envy and ambition, or honor and patriotism.

It would have been MUCH better had there not been very loud music from a nearby wedding. At times the music was so loud it was difficult to hear the actors.Written on Jul 06 2009

It's Julius Ceasar, one of Shakespeare's tightest direct plays. Not too much can go wrong. This was nicely started in the always fine setting of Will Geer. There was a twist of having a female in the role of Cassius that placed a bit of psychological variant in the mix.Written on Jun 29 2009
In general the play went well up until the funeral. Then things slid and were less convincing. Brutus's oration was particularly ineffective. You wanted to lynch him even before Antony spoke. Then the play seemed to rush to the end. Time was expended on unnecessay battle scenes while the very critical visits of Ceasar's ghost were among the incidents excised. It felt undramatic.
Perhaps it has become too familiar to this viewer but I found no drama or tragedy after the death of Ceasar. SS is somewhat interested in the political opportunism and insincerity that takes hold in wake of the death. The problem was that it all seemed cynical and preordained at that point. The editing and acting must have been a factor.
Certainly worth a trip on a weekend afternoon but not an entirely satisfactory experience.

I love this venue. You can always count on this company of actors for an excellent performance. Julius Caesar was no exception. I particularly liked the way the hillside was used to depict battles waged over distances and chaos unfolding across Rome.Written on Oct 04 2009

Description

There are no simple heroes or villains in Shakespeare’s powerful rendering of this pivotal historical event. A group of high government officials assassinate a popular leader, then urge the people of Rome to back their heinous deed. Were the conspirators motivated by envy and ambition or honor and patriotism? Julius Caesar is the all-too familiar story of a misguided political regime that loses its balance by ignoring the will of the people, unwittingly driving their once mighty nation into chaos and civil war.
