I'll admit that sitting for three hours through this Eugene O'Neill classic about an extremely dysfunctional turn-of-the-century (19th into 20th, that is) Irish-Written on Sep 25 2008
American, theatrical family would be difficult nowadays (with our modern, limited-patience & attention-span) even starring the likes of O'Neill masters' Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards........well, thank goodness for the very talented Equity actors (especially Jim LeFave & Artistic Director Ellen Greer), and the unbelievably enchanted forest that is the Will Greer Theatricum Botanicum for producing a magical (albeit heartbreaking) evening of theatre!!
I had been wanting to experience this Topanga Canyon amphitheater for some time now, and what an experience it was.........beautiful gardens, comfortable (even cool) night air, a lot of convenient parking, and even a quick Friday rush-hour ride out on the 101 from Los Angeles! But best of all were the carefully directed (well staged by Heidi Helen Davis), and expertly crafted performances all created by classically oriented (and really gifted!) professionals.
It's amazing to me how well that play worked in the outdoor playhouse......set in a garden carved into a hillside canyon.
Thank you Will Greer (in theatre heaven now), and Goldstar for providing a sensational Los Angeles evening!!

The acting was superb in "Long Day's Journey into Night". I had read the play in high school and wanted to see it because I remember it was one of my favorites! Wow! As an adult it has taken on a much deeper meaning. I am so glad I went to see it. My friends also loved it. Thank you to Theatricum Botanicum and Goldstar for a lovely evening.Written on Sep 29 2008

Ellen Geer's interpretation of "Mary" was different from any others I've seen - and she was luminous, but the actor playing James Tyrone was just average, and the two actors playing the sons were terrible. They evidenced no understanding of the text and there was no rhythm to their scenes. "Jamie" was too old by a decade and incapable of an honest rendering of the material. "Edmund" was also in way over his head, on which he inexplicably sported a pony tail. Their scenes were painful to endure. An evening at the beautiful Theatricum Botanicum listening to Ellen Geer read the play would have been far better than experiencing the weak kinks in this production.Written on Sep 22 2008
