In Theatricum's latest outdoor production at their scenic Topanga Canyon venue, Melora Marshall and Chad Jason Scheppner alternate performing in the title role of Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece about a ruthlessly ambitious man who seeks the crown at any cost. One of literature's most memorable villains, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, uses charm, cunning and wit to move up the political ladder -- without hesitating to murder those who stand in his way. Phenominal and professional acting ! I could only stay thru first act (lower back issues), but loved every minute of what I saw.

The acting was excellent. It was my first time seeing Shakespeare so I felt it was a bit long for this kind of venue since the seats were wooden & not very comfortable, even with the cushions I brought. Other than that, it was mostly enjoyable.

We did not know whether we were seeing a man or a woman (or both) playing Richard and it would have been nice to know beforehand what we were buying tickets to. She did not use her lower register at all, so instead of Richard being evil and manipulative, he just sounded whiny. The rest of the cast wasn't bad, but nothing outstanding. The battle choreography was boring and unimaginative. Nothing remarkable about this production and very much below TB's normally high standard. Maybe the one with the actor playing Richard is better. There was also a BIG problem with our tickets. We had tickets for a Sat. Matinee and didn't find out until we got to the theatre that Richard III did not play until Sunday! The theatre corrected the problem (sort of) by giving us free tickets for Merry Wives of Windsor on Saturday and tickets to Richard III for the next day. Far from ideal...

Description

Richard III
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Ellen Geer
Starring Melora Marshall and Chad Jason Scheppner, alternating in the title role

The story of the most charismatic villain ever to command the stage. Daunted by a life of physical challenges, Richard weaves a fiery web of intrigue, removing all obstacles - and all people - that stand between him and his passion for the throne of England. Shakespeare's delightfully bloody and brutal history follows the corrupt path of a twisted man with equally twisted ambitions as Richard manipulates, marries and murders his way to the top with unmatched charm and zeal.

Following last season’s successful double-casting of Hamlet, this production of Richard III finds longtime Theatricum members Melora Marshall and Chad Jason Scheppner sharing the title role. When not playing Richard, Marshall also alternates as the Duchess of York, mother to Richard and the brothers he plots to overthrow.

Asked why she chose to split the role of Richard between a female and male actor, director Ellen Geer explains, “We auditioned throughout the company, and Melora and Chad were the two who
were able to weave the spell demanded by the role. Richard needs to entrance the audience, to win them over as he makes his Machiavellian plans, and when these two actors read, it was immediately obvious to everybody that they were right for the part. It’s as simple as that.”
