As much a cultural phenomenon as a theatrical event, Cats enjoyed a record-breaking run on Broadway and in London, thanks to its feline-inspired costumes, sets, dancing and memorable songs by famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story, inspired by a collection of poetry from T.S. Eliot, revolves around a tribe known as the Jellicle cats, and their leader Old Deuteronomy, who'll choose one of their group to be reborn that night after their annual ball. The longest-touring Broadway musical in history, Cats features 20 of Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song "Memory," and was the winner of seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The act could use a little polishing. Some of her delivery was flat, with a little "Deer in Headlights" vibe. Occasionally she would light up and deliver her lines with some enthusiasm. I can appreciate the stress and fear of public speaking. I was rooting for her and applauding at every opportunity to give her some encouragement. She could remove 20 minutes of redundant lyrics and tap dancing to move it along, but my Mom enjoyed it and that's what counts most.
I love the Encore. Their biggest mistake was allowing guests to serve themselves. We were near the back of the line and the buffet table was picked clean by the time we got there. On my way back to my table to wait, I saw enormous plates of food languishing on many tables. Human nature. The buffet table was eventually replenished but not before many hungry patrons complained. Learn and improve.
Show run time is 90 minutes, including a 10-minute intermission.
For those who purchase meal-inclusive tickets, the meal includes salad, bread and soft drink. Lunch is buffet-style; check out the dinner entree options.
