We are fans of traditional blues as opposed to blues rock. This group delivered traditional blues. Very enjoyable music.

Quotes & Highlights

Description

Lurrie Bell was named “Best Chicago Blues Musician” by the Chicago Reader in 2008, who described the guitar work on his latest album, Let’s Talk About Love, as “raw emotion and fiery technique in a majestic meld of tonal aggression, linear sureness, and exploratory drive. [Bell’s] sound these days is shot through with triumph…his music reminds us that the blues, for all its stereotypes about pain and suffering, is ultimately about overcoming.” Critics at WXRT Chicago and The Pittsburgh Post Gazette hailed Let’s Talk About Love as one of the best blues albums of the year in 2007.

Lurrie Bell’s story begins years earlier; born on Dec. 13, 1958, he was raised in Chicago in a household naturally steeped in the blues. At 15, he formed his first band while attending Crane High School on the Chicago’s west side. In 1977 at the age of 17, Bell was a founding member of The Sons of Blues with fellow Chicago blues icons Freddie Dixon (son of Willie) and Billy Branch (son of Ben), and performed that year at the Berlin Jazz Festival presented as the New Generation of Chicago Blues.

At age 20, Bell joined the band of Koko Taylor, Chicago's acknowledged “Queen of the Blues,” and stayed on for several years honing his chops and learning the ropes of being a traveling musician. Around this time Bell also teamed up with his father, as a member of Carey Bell's Blues Harp Band.  Lurrie Bell was recognized as an exceptionally talented guitarist and musician destined for greatness; his soulfulness and musical maturity brought write-ups in Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Although a series of personal problems took their toll on his great potential in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bell remained prodigious, having contributed to more than 50 albums, including numerous solo efforts, duets with his father, and an extensive list of guest appearances. Since the onset of the new millennium, Bell has been steadily raising his profile; without question, Lurrie Bell is back and better than ever, ready to provide The Center’s audience with an unforgettable evening of cool blues.  Currently, Bell’s band is comprised of Lurrie Bell on guitar/vocals, Willie Hayes on drums, Melvin Smith on bass and Daryl Coutts on keyboard.
