Description
The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University merrily presents The Holiday Hop featuring chart-topping ’50s and ’60s groups Cornell Gunter’s Coasters, The Platters and The Marvelettes. These smooth and soulful hit makers bring excitement, comedy and romance to Chicago’s Southland this holiday season, with music to please every palate. The Holiday Hop is generously supported by Soul 106.3 FM.
According to CBS News, “this could very well be the definitive show on the history of early rock and roll,” while Newsweek raves “all in all, a night of sheer fun.” From “Under the Boardwalk” to “Only You,” “Please Mr. Postman” and “Yakety Yak,” together these three groups boast a non-stop show of familiar hits from the past. Charismatic and electrifying, each group performs their songs exactly as audiences remember hearing them on the radio 50 years ago.
Five teenagers formed The Platters in the early 1950s: Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, Herb Reed, Paul Robi and David Lynch. Their famed manager Buck Ram wrote many of their hits that went on to be recorded by such superstars as Neil Diamond, Bette Midler, Elton John and Boyz II Men. Defining a style of rhythm and blues that remains in force today, The Platters are known for a soaring tenor lead backed up by the smoothest of harmonies as well as an operatic female soprano. With 21 top 10 records, singles such as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Only You,” “My Prayer” and “The Great Pretender” garnering sales exceeding 9 million and 5 Platinum albums, The Platters’ total record sales exceed 200 million, making them one of Billboard Magazine’s Top 25 Selling Artists of All Time.
Cornell Gunter of the famed group The Coasters developed an approach to 1950s rock and roll music that lent itself to constant innovation, reconstituting groups like The Platters and Drifters into live performing groups that became favorites of oldies radio stations across the country. Gunter has since passed away but his legacy lives on under the tutelage of his sister Shirley, an original member of The Platters, who continues to incorporate Gunter’s genius into The Coasters of today.
The Marvelettes occupy an esteemed place in the history of American popular music as the group that caused Motown, and most notably Berry Gordy, to change the label’s focus from single bluesy soul artist to a smooth orchestrated harmonic sound that transcended the prior racial limits of rhythm and blues. With their first record “Please Mr. Postman,” hitting the top spot on the charts and selling 3 million records in a crossover market, they helped create a new “pop soul” group sound for Motown that completely dominated the music charts. In a performance featuring their biggest hits, the girls continue in the smooth Motown style with a highly choreographed, polished and charismatic act.
