Description
<p>Witness Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” unfold and its colorful characters develop live onstage as the award-winning Montana Repertory Theatre brings its compelling performance to The Center for the Chicago-area premiere of their stage adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
“To Kill a Mockingbird,” which celebrates the 50th anniversary of its publication in July 2010, was brought to the screen in an Academy Award-winning adaptation by Horton Foote in 1962 and was later adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel. The stage adaptation continues to compel and delight viewers with its warmth, wit and wisdom. The audience is transported to a sleepy Southern town in the 1930s, and discovers that the issues of that time – prejudice, racism, and human values – are universal issues.
The story of “To Kill A Mockingbird” takes place in the sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. Scout Finch, the story’s six-year-old narrator, along with her older brother Jem and their friend Dill, are fascinated by their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley. Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer defending Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Atticus prevails in establishing that Robinson’s accusers are lying and he goes free. Later, while walking home from a Halloween party, Jem and Scout are attacked by Ewell’s father, and the children are rescued by the mysterious Boo Radley.
Montana Repertory Theatre, established in 1967, is one of the oldest and most respected touring theater companies in the U.S. Comprised of actors, directors and designers with Broadway, Off-Broadway and prestigious regional theater credits, the company presents American and world literature-based plays at venues across the country.
