I have been to many enjoyable performances at the Grove Theater. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. It started late, some of the mikes were either not turned on or the players failed to use them properly. It was like a high school production with people who were not coming in on time with their lines. There were a few good laughs and we really enjoyed an outstanding performance by a young man who did a rap song to Edger Allen Poe's "The Raven." Perhaps with some more practice it will improve.
The story is of two worlds colliding in 1989, the last year of the old Vegas, the Rat pack Vegas. The son of an Elvis impersonator falls in love with the daughter of a Yale professor. The trouble begins when the Las Vegas father wants his son to join him in his Las Vegas revue, and the son wants to work for the government.
Fred Willard, (Best in Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, WALL-E, 100 appearances on The Tonight show With Jay Leno) stars as the self proclaimed “King of the Elvis Impersonators.”
He is joined by Richard Horvitz (winner of the Inland Empire award for best supporting actor in MoonShine!,) as his brother, a Dean Martin impersonator. Paul Willson (Cheers, Office Space, Malcolm in the Middle) plays the Yale professor. Judy Nazemetz (Moon Shine!, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno) plays Fred’s wife, a former exotic dancer. Natalie Lander, (Legally Blonde TV) plays Juliet and she is the daughter of David L. Lander of Laverne and Shirley fame and the granddaughter of Polly Bergen. Ginger Kinison (Moon Shine!) plays Lisa Marie daughter of the Elvis impersonator. Jared Hillman plays Elvis (Hannah Montana, Psych, General Hospital) the son who only wants to have a wife, some kids and maybe a dog. Anne Johnston-Brown (An Occasional Sin and winner of 6 Inland Empire Awards for Best Actress) plays Nancy, award winning author and mother to Juliet.
Saturday, October 24th there will be a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire with $10 of each ticket going to the organization. October 31st, Halloween, the audience is invited to come in costume. There will be a prize for the best Elvis costume.
Elvis and Juliet is directed by Ted Lange, award winning director and actor who is beloved by thousands as Issac the bartender on The Love Boat. He has directed some of the top TV shows including Moesha, Drake and Josh and Dharma and Greg. He is an award winning playwright and winner of the Renaissance Man Theatre Award from the NAACP and the Paul Robeson Award from AFI. He directed Mary Willard's award winning musical Moon Shine!
