Riots erupt in Pennsylvania's Hill District after a black mill worker is wrongfully accused of theft; across town, a young man from Alabama arrives at the home of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old healer and mystic who sends him on a journey of spiritual awakening. Set in 1904 and chronologically the first play in August Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle -- a decade-by-decade dramatization of aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century, Gem of the Ocean also makes for the first of Wilson's plays to be staged by Rubicon Theatre.
